With the holidays right around the corner, we figured a few tips on how to make the season a little more sustainable would be useful. Here are 5 simple tips to keep in mind.
Focus on quality vs. quantity
When buying gifts for friends and loved ones, think: less but better. Putting the time into picking a quality item over multiple non-quality ones will save you money, and the gift will last a long time.
Gift an experience
Gifting an experience for your friends and loved ones will reduce the demand for physical resources.
Remove packaging
Reduce waste by buying gifts with little or no packaging. Shopping locally can help.
Try out your wrapping skills
Look for cards and wrapping paper that is made from recycled or FSC-certified paper. Additionally, try to avoid plastic ribbon and tape or foil-backed wrapping paper.
Consider the materials
Look at what materials gifts are made from before buying them, and keep sustainability in mind. Try to avoid single plastic items that can’t be recycled and look for things like Organic-certified food and clothing. Tip: Vintage clothes and/or home decor and refurbished technology make great sustainable gifts.
