The Surfer’s Journal, Surfer Mag, The Inertia…a perfect catch for the salty surfer. Well written, with even better photographs, these outlets captivate those searching for the best break, craving stories from surfing's greatest legends, or simply those fine-tuning their shaka. But where do the ordinary folk, who also love the ocean and then some, go for their regular scheduled programming? I’ll give you a hint…(it doesn’t start with Surfer).

To save our oceans, three things need to happen. First, we need a will to live—yes, you read that correctly. We can’t protect our waters, the wave, or whatever our earthly vice without caring for the lives and longevity of all beings. The second is collaboration. Historically, humans are most innovative when living in community—one where each member can contribute equally and gather in collective spaces. And the third, to save the ocean, we need a pragmatic call to action that can be executed efficiently, swiftly, and by the masses. Here’s where eco-media, like The Momentum, and prime surfing events, such as Surf Re-Evolution, come into play.

If ocean conservation and sustainable surf is on our agenda, their advocacy requires a wider range of impactful content and in-person, community events that will engage surfers and land dwellers alike.

In Other News

Surfers aren’t just surfers. Their strong interpersonal connection to the ocean both in and out of the water has turned them into fierce advocates for ocean conservation efforts. And with it comes a growing desire for sustainability media that extends beyond a classic surf mag—something that goes a little deeper.

Surfers want more variety; more platforms and hands-on places to learn about sustainable surfing practices and earth-friendly gear. They want alternative resources; more education on how to become better ocean stewards, how to adapt sustainable lifestyles out of the water, and stories from other industries that inspire. The good news is that these outlets, alongside surfer magazines, are readily available to all ocean lovers.

Aware of their camaraderie within a vast, global community, surfers have the aptitude to flex their influence alongside other ocean activists, including fishermen, underwater photographers, marine scientists, policy makers and so many others. Stories from this cohort should be amplified, as their impact is far greater than a single wave. This collective is meant to both lead and inspire the public into action, so where their stories are told matters.

Diverse sustainability media not only highlight issues happening globally, but can help spread this advocacy like wildfire—fostering community-level response, action, and solidarity. An ethereal interplay of community, activism, and surf is surely enough for anyone to pick up an uncharted magazine, scroll through a digital read on a variety of platforms—or attend a storytelling session at a community event.
