It all started with a simple concept: giving 1% of sales back to the environment. In 2002, Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia, and Craig Mathews, founder of Blue Ribbon Flies, created 1% for the Planet and started a global movement. Today, 1% for the Planet has a network of more than 3,000 members coming together to protect the future of our planet.
Despite being a challenging year all around, 2020 was a defining year for 1% for the Planet. The environmental crisis did not pause because of a pandemic. In fact, the metrics highlighted in 1% for the Planet’s 2020 Annual Report tell a story of hope.

You have a whole life in the outdoors, you realize you have a sense of responsibility to protect these wild places.
Yvon Chouinard
Founder of Patagonia & 1% for the Planet
The year 2020 surfaced urgent issues of our time, including wildfires, social injustices, and a pandemic. The 1% for the Planet team went fully remote and had to postpone their Annual Global Summit. Nonetheless, they managed to strengthen their community internally, externally, and internationally. All while serving business members, investing in employees, securing big brands, and boosting brand awareness. Their certified member giving number was $32M - a key metric that indicates they are delivering on their value proposition.
Looking forward, 1% for the Planet aims to become the most recognized global environmental community. A network momentum is proud to be a part of!
Increase in US brand awareness
At 1% for the Planet, despite this year’s unique challenges, we are grateful that 2020 gave us the opportunity to become stronger together and more resilient - for the planet and for people.
