Sports have always been a sphere that is most typically masculine, putting aside great potentials that have only been discarded due to a gender dispute. However, things have been changing for the better.
Throughout the Feminist Revolution that has been taking over for the past decades, prominent talents have emerged. This is the case of Danielle Black Lyons, an African American young woman who is known to be an artist, surfer, and mother.
Danielle has gained much notoriety inside the surfing scenario, becoming the Co-Founder and Ambassador of brands that have gained relevance throughout the world. But how did her journey throughout the waters start?
Lyons’s passion for the ocean has always been something she acknowledged, as one of her beloved hobbies was bodyboarding in California. After a trip to Hawaii, she progressed her skills – and love – to surfing, her match in the world of sports.
As she grew older, the water became her refuge. Her whole life is planned “according to the changing tides,” adapting her agenda to do what she loves as much as she wants. It is on her board that she socializes, relaxes, and makes plans for the future.
How is she making a difference? By making the sports scenario more inclusive of women.
Perhaps one of Danielle’s greatest career achievements is linked to her work as the Ambassador of Textured Waves. It was a way of transforming one of her greatest passions – surfing – into something that could make a change for its own ambit.
The so-called “sisterhood” was founded not only to raise awareness around the inequality seen in surfing but also to encourage other women to explore activities they may not explore due to the gender gap in-between. As one of the co-founders, Danielle engages actively in events that highlight its importance to the public and meetings that may take place in or outside of water.
Textured Waves has been taking strides in reaching diversity, gaining the attention of significant brands like Vans, Adidas, and Vogue.
ROXY, another company Danielle has worked with, was born with a similar purpose but a different concept. The business was born as an encouragement for women to take even bigger steps into diversity in surfing. In a market where products were made thinking of the male body, ROXY’s purpose was to be a brand made for women.
Lyons took the role of Ambassador with pride, as she felt it was a brand that encouraged all she has ever supported as an activist. ROXY was born for those like Danielle, who love and respect the ocean and the environment, becoming way more than simply a feminine swimwear clothing line.
The partnership felt perfect for both sides, as supporting the brand would be giving continuity to her work throughout the feminine community of surfers worldwide.
Lyons is also making a difference through her example. She also proved through her own experience that living the intensity of the waters did not stop her from being an excellent companion and parent, nor did it stop other activities she cultivates.
Having graduated in Arts in college, she uses the ocean as her source of inspiration to produce her works. She features her art around the events she takes part in to raise awareness for her cause.
As a mother, Danielle discovered surfing as a way of reconnecting herself with her own being and mind and finding purpose in life after traumatic postpartum experiences. Being physically incapable of investing in her favorite hobby for four months, Lyons found her mental state deteriorated. Only when she got back to surfing did she learn once more what made her a human, helping her connect to her newborn son and those around her.
Danielle is an inspiration for all of us, thus the reason why she takes part in so many noteworthy projects towards the growth of her community. Not only does she promote diversity, but shows through her life and her story that a woman can do whatever she wants and be wherever she needs to be.
Her sisterhood of surfers did not stop her from being a mother, a hardworking professional, and a creative artist. Danielle continues to inspire us toward diversity in sports through a utopia of reality that is bound to become real.
